Cuntan approved as interior’s first meat import terminal

26 June 2013
Cuntan container terminal in Chongqing has been approved to handle containerised imported meat, according to China Water Transport Newspaper. This follows the creation of a designated area where 24 refrigerated containers can be stored at any one time, equipped with four power distribution boxes.

This means that the terminal can handle 360 reefers each month, totalling 7,200 tons of refrigerated cargo. The second phase of construction will see the building of 48 reefer power sockets, a special inspection area of 1,200 square metres and two automated disinfection routes that will spray disinfectant onto all trucks entering the bonded terminal.

Demand for imported meat has increased rapidly in Chongqing over the past few years, but until now the city has had to rely on companies based in coastal cities that distribute their produce to Chongqing via rail. Officials are confident that the new facility in Cuntan terminal will encourage local firms to import meat directly from overseas, thereby ensuring better quality at lower prices for consumers in the city.
