SIPG joins NEMS in metal logistics venture

26 June 2013
SIPG Logistics, a subsidiary of Shanghai International Port (Group), has teamed up with the UK-based metals warehousing and logistics company North European Marine Services to create a metals logistics network that aims to improve connections between mainland China and international metal markets.

The 50-50 joint venture, called Shanghai NEMS Port Logistics, will combine SIPGL’s established warehousing, ports and logistics infrastructure along the Yangtze River with the global customer base of NEMS to collect and deliver raw materials and finished products across China and through NEMS’s global network of distribution hubs, Dow Jones reported.

“The joint venture… will give the Chinese access to metals available at the moment only on the east coast of China,” said Charles Bucknall, managing director of NEMS. In addition, he said it will allow Chinese companies to take metal out of China via the same route and into the company’s network of 108 metals warehouses across the world.

NEMS is currently building a new warehouse in Yangshan Free Trade Port Area in Shanghai with a floor capacity of 20,000 square metres. Construction is due to be completed in 2013.
