Yangtze water level reaches 5m in middle reaches

3 July 2013
The Yangtze Waterway Bureau has announced that the water level between Wuhan and Yichang will be maintained at five metres during July and August, allowing 5,000dwt vessels to sail smoothly in an otherwise difficult section of the river downstream of the Three Gorges Dam.

From September, the section between Yichang and Chenglingji, immediately downstream of the Three Gorges, will be maintained at four metres, while the section between Chenglingji and Wuhan will continue to be maintained at five metres.

The waterway authorities have an obligation to maintain a guaranteed minimum water level in different sections of the river. The middle reaches have been difficult for shipping since the constructions of two major hydropower projects, the Three Gorges Dam and Gezhouba Dam. However, the guaranteed minimum water level has been raised to the current level of five metres from four metres in 2007, according to Xiong Xuebing, Director of the Yangtze River Waterway Bureau.
