Wuhan speeds up building intermodal container capability

10 July 2013
Zhang Lin, head of Wuhan New Port Authority, met with Wang Yaping, head of Wuhan Railway Bureau on 4 July and discussed ways to build the city’s capability of transporting containers via rail and waterway.

Wuhan New Port Authority represents Hubei provincial government in co-ordinating and promoting a coherent strategy to develop shipping. Wuhan Railway Bureau is one of the major branches of the recently established China Railway Corporation.

Among other things, the two organisations agreed to set up a joint task force to work with shipping lines such as Cosco to establish regular services and increase market share. Both parties agreed to provide financial support for the initial stage as operators try to build a client base.

Insiders from Wuhan New Port Authority say that the provincial government aims to apply to the Ministry of Transport by the end of this year to include its intermodal project as part of the ministry’s pilot scheme. The ministry announced its first list of intermodal projects last year and all of them were based in coastal cities. Analysts believe Wuhan is a likely contender for the new list.
