Xiluodu hydrostation starts operation

17 July 2013
The second-largest hydropower station in China became operational on 15 July when its first power-generating unit officially started work after a three-day test run.

The Xiluodu station started providing electricity to southern China’s power grid, said operator China Three Gorges Corporation. It has a total generating capacity of 13.86 gigawatts, making it the world's third-largest station after the Three Gorges and the Itaipu in South America.

Xiluodu is located in the Jinsha River, a major headstream of the Yangtze in southwestern Yunnan and Sichuan provinces. It is expected to be completed in 2015 with 18 power generating units.
