Three Gorges reinforce AIS inspection

18 September 2013
Maritime safety officials are focusing their efforts on rooting out any abuse of the Automated Identification System in the Three Gorges area. AIS has proved effective in reducing the number of collisions on the Yangtze River and the maritime safety authorities want to make sure that all vessels passing the Three Gorges have switched on their AIS as required. Any violations would result in severe fines and even the withdrawal of shipping licences.

Meanwhile, security measures at the Three Gorges are to be tightened to coincide with the National Day holiday on 1 October.

Special arrangements will be in force regarding the flow of traffic and personnel around the dam. There will also be a ban on the flying of light helicopters, hot air balloons, unmanned drones and other flying objects in the area of the dam.

The dam is of strategic importance to China, say officials, in supplying electricity to large parts of the country and securing the lives and property of 15m people who live downstream.
