Yangtze infrastructure funding a priority – transport minister

18 September 2013
The steering committee for co-ordinated development of Yangtze shipping, headed by Minister of Transport Yang Chuantang and attended by senior representatives from the local governments of Chongqing, Yunnan, Shanghai, Jiangsu, Anhui and Jiangxi, met in Wuhan on 14 September. This followed the July visit by President Xi Jinping to Wuhan Yangluo container terminal.

Mr Yang said that investment in Yangtze infrastructure will remain a top priority for central and local governments for a considerable time, with marked improvement by end of the 12th five-year plan. Yangtze infrastructure covers the building of shipping channels, ports and terminals, roads that link these terminals to expressways, and communications facilities. The minister called for a speeding up of efforts to develop intermodal capabilities and logistics.

The meeting, the fourth since its inauguration in 2006, is a platform for the central government and local governments along the Yangtze to discuss and co-ordinate Yangtze development strategies. The previous meetings were held in Nanjing in November 2006, Hefei in June 2009 and Nanchang in June 2011.

Between 2011 and 2012, the central and local governments invested nearly Rmb69bn in the Yangtze and its tributaries, accounting for almost 80 per cent of the total investments in China’s inland waterway network. The first half of the year saw more than Rmb20bn investment in the Yangtze, accounting for 83 per cent of China’s investment in its inland waterway network.
