Pearl River cargo volumes grow in August

Cargo volume on the Pearl River and its tributaries in southern China increased 15.1 per cent year-on-year to 53.5m tonnes in August, according to the Pearl River Administration of Navigational Affairs. The main types of cargo carried included construction materials, cement and coal.

In terms of payload distance, cargo turnover increased 14.2 per cent to 12bn tonnes per kilometre.

The combined throughput of ports on the Pearl River and its tributaries climbed 18.6 per cent to 35.9m tonnes in August. Foreign-trade shipments accounted for 5.06m tonnes of this total, 18.2 per cent more than the same month one year ago. Containers handled by these ports increased 13.5 per cent to 672,000 TEU.
