SIPG plans fourth phase construction at Yangshan

16 October 2013
Chen Xuyuan, board chairman of Shanghai International Port Group, said at a press conference on 15 October that the company had completed a proposal for the fourth phase of construction at Yangshan terminal and was in a position to submit it for approval to Shanghai Commission of Reform and Development.

According to the proposal, phase four will focus on building a fully automated quay, and it will take three years to complete once official approval is granted. Further details have not been disclosed.

Thanks to renovation and expansion projects carried out at its existing quays, Yangshan terminal, which started operation in 2005, managed to handle a total of 14.15m TEU in 2012. This was 52 per cent above its initially designed capacity. Without the proposed fourth phase, the terminal will not cope with rising demand, Mr Chen said.

Taking into consideration the throughput of Shanghai’s other terminals including Waigaoqiao, Shanghai port will handle a total of 33.5m TEU by the end of the year, up about three per cent over that of last year.
