SDRC: intermodal transport key to Yangtze economic belt

30 October 2013
Since mid-October the State Development and Reform Commission and the Ministry of Transport have been leading a group of senior representatives from 11 other ministries on a fact-finding mission to the major cities and provinces along the Yangtze to firm up on a national strategy to develop the river area as China’s new economic growth belt.

The group will cover Yunnan, Sichuan, Chongqing, Hunan, Hubei, Jiangxi, Anhui, Jiangsu and Shanghai. By the end of October, these provinces and municipalities will also submit their own requests and planning to the SDRC, which, as a central planner, will consolidate and develop them into a national strategy.

Xu Xuanping, deputy governor of the SDRC and the man who headed the mission, told officials at the Yangtze River Administration on 14 October that developing intermodal transport is the key to facilitating economic growth along the Yangtze.
