Yangtze MSA warns of vessel blacklist

30 October 2013
Yangtze Maritime Safety Authorities have issued a warning to all shipping lines that any overloading or dishonesty about the draught of a vessel that leads to stranding will be reason for them to be blacklisted and their licences suspended for three to six months.

The Yangtze entered its dry season at the beginning of October and the water level in the middle and lower reaches has started to decline. The shipping channels is therefore becoming shallower and narrower, creating hazardous shipping conditions.

On 18 October, a vessel operator carrying 8,000 tons of sand from Yueyang to Shanghai declared a draught of 4.5 metres, while the actual level was 6.8 metres. It got stranded just downstream of Wuhan, blocking traffic for hours. The vessel and its captain have been detained by MSA officials and the case is still under investigation.
