Yangtze vessel programme ups average size to 1,080dwt

30 October 2013
The central government-driven Yangtze vessel standardisation programme, rolled out in 2010 with subsidies and targets, increased the average size of vessels on the Yangtze trunkline to 1,080dwt by the end of 2012. This was 26 per cent up on the 2008 average of 800dwt, according to the Yangtze River Administration under the Ministry of Transport.

Central government subsidies of Rmb1.55bn so far have allowed the scrapping and renovation of nearly 7,200 vessels, amounting to 3.4m dwt. The administration categorised more than 10,000 vessels as being old and in need of scrapping or renovation. Under the subsidy scheme, these vessels are withdrawn from service on a compulsory basis.

Anhui province has identified 4,500 old vessels, accounting for one third of the total. So far, 2,450 of them have been scrapped involving the payment subsidies of totalling Rmb400m to shipowners.

The programme aims to modernise the Yangtze shipping fleet, increase the average size of vessels and improve their efficiency and cost effectiveness. By 2020, the average size of Yangtze vessels will rise to 2,000dwt, according to Minister of Transport Yang Chuantang.
