New cargo for Yangtze ro-ro service

7 November 2013
Thirty tankers carrying spirits made in Sichuan successfully completed a successful first journey on a Yangtze roll on, roll off service a week ago. This followed nearly two years of feasibility studies and preparation, initiated by the Yangtze River Administration in an attempt to help manufacturers find a safer and cheaper alternative to trucking.

The vessel named ‘Mount Hua Ying’ carried the tankers from Guojiatuo ro-ro terminal in Chongqing to Yingxintuo ro-ro terminal in Yichang on 19 October. According to official figures, 530,000 tons of spirits were transported out of the manufacturing base in Sichuan in 2011 and 400,000 tons of which was trucked to consumer markets in east and central China, accounting for a daily volume of 60 tankers.

Major producers in the region are forecasting an annual growth of five to 10 per cent. By the end of the 12th five-year period, the total output of spirits will reach 850,000 tons. The annual volume leaving Sichuan will hit 32,000 tankers, each carrying 20 tons.

Given the risk of fire and leakage, special training was given to vessel crew members and terminal operators.
