Zhenjiang’s new terminal nears completion

13 November 2013
The finishing touches are being put to Zhenjiang’s new terminal, Xinmingzhou, before it starts operation by the end of this year, according to local media. Situated on the northern bank of the Yangtze River and 37km from the city centre, the multi-purpose terminal will have two 50,000 dwt berths in phase one and four 50,000 dwt berths in phase two.

The terminal operator was quoted as saying that the Rmb800m first phase had reached the final stage where the Customs, Border Inspections and Quarantine are setting up offices and procedures before the terminal opens for business. The second phase, costing Rmb1.3bn, including seven 1,000 dwt berths, is awaiting approval from the provincial port authorities. Building work is expected to start by the end of this year. By 2015, there will be nine berths capable of catering for vessels of 10,000 dwt and above, with a total handling capacity of 80m tons.

Currently, all the city’s terminals are located on the southern bank of the Yangtze. In 2012, Zhenjiang, one of the major ports in the lower reaches of the Yangtze, boasted a general cargo throughput of 135m tons, up 14 per cent year-on-year, and a container throughput of 375,000 TEU, up 3.6 per cent.
