Yangtze barge sinks in heavy fog

11 December 2013
A barge named Suhuai Cargo 10996 carrying 1,200 tons of sand sank near Jiujiang No.2 Power Plant on the morning of 8 December amid heavy fog, causing all four crew members to fall into the water, according to the China Water Transport News. The rescue officials despatched by Jiujiang Maritime Safety Authorities managed to locate and save two, while the remaining two swam to safety.

It is understood that water seeped into the boat via a hole in the hull, causing it to sink. But the cause of the leakage is still being investigated.

On the day, visibility was below 30 metres and shipping had been suspended across the Yangtze, according to MSA officials. The rescue boat ‘Patrol 12246’ responded to the alarm immediately despite facing serious risk itself. It moved forward cautiously in the enveloping fog and located the victims about 50 metres from the city’s heavy goods terminal. By the time the two crew members were brought up to the safety of the rescue boat, they had been in the cold Yangtze water for over an hour.
