New Chongqing terminal starts operations

18 December 2013
Chongqing Guoyuan terminal on the upper reaches of the Yangtze River was put into use earlier this month. It will be connected with the Chongqing-Xinjiang-Europe International Railway, via which cargo from the lower reaches of the Yangtze in eastern and central China can be transported to Europe.

Construction of the Rmb10.5bn terminal in Liangjiang New Area began in 2008 and will be completed in 2015. It is able to accommodate 5,000-ton ships all year round and can already handle 400,000 TEU a year, along with 3m tons of bulk cargo and 500,000 roll-on-roll-off trucks.

Additional railway connections to Guoyuan include the Chongqing-Hunan Railway, which will open to traffic by the end of 2014, while nearby expressways enable fast road links to Shanghai, Yibin and Chengdu.

Chongqing is an increasingly important export-oriented manufacturing centre. From January to November 2013, its total import and export value stood at US$61.12bn, a growth rate of 25 per cent year-on-year. Imports increased 47 per cent to US$19.54bn.
