Three Gorges water level falls by a metre

18 December 2013
A report by the Three Gorges Administration showed that the water level behind the Three Gorges Dam has fallen by nearly 0.9 metres since it reached 175 metres briefly on 11 November. At 10am on 10 December, the water level was reported at 174.1 metres. This resulted from low water volumes coming from the upper reaches and the need to maintain discharge volumes from the dam. Volumes from the upper reaches have been restricted due to the restoring cycle of the newly operational hydropower projects at Xiangjiaba and Xiluodu. The Three Gorges Reservoir needs to maintain its level of discharge to help alleviate the drought in the middle and lower reaches of the river to ensure safe shipping.

Separately, on 8 December, officials from the Yangtze River Administration and the China Yangtze Three Gorges Corp involved in building the hydropower projects in the upper reaches gathered in Kunming, Yunnan province, to discuss issues relating to the water storing and releasing cycles of the projects and their impact on shipping in general. A task force has been set up under the instruction of the Ministry of Transport to co-ordinate shipping.
