Yangtze MSA issues cold front alert

18 December 2013
Yangtze Maritime Safety Authorities issued a safety alert on 16 December following a major cold front enveloping the entire river that had already plunged temperatures to below 10°C. In the next three days or so, the temperature in the south will fall further, according to China’s Central Meteorological Station. This can cause heavy fog and low visibility, which in turn creates shipping hazards, according to the MSA alert. On top of that, the entire Yangtze has entered its dry season with marked changes to the shipping channels.

Due to decreasing water levels behind the Three Gorges Dam, shipping conditions are becoming unusually complicated. Maritime safety officials in Yichang, immediately downstream of the dam, are reminding passing vessels of the heightened risks from the changing water levels and weather. They have also increased the frequency of patrols to daily, particularly in high-risk places such as public anchorage areas, and in the vicinity of bridges and ferry services.
