Yangtze container throughput up 9.1% in 2013

Figures released by the Yangtze River Administration under the Ministry of Transport show that the major ports along the Yangtze trunkline reported a combined throughput of 13.57m TEU for 2013, representing a year-on-year increase of 9.1 per cent. Throughout of general cargo was up 6.7 per cent to 1.92bn tons.

However, December figures were disappointing, with container throughput falling by 7.5 per cent year-on-year to 1.15m TEU, and throughput of general cargo rising by just 1.9 per cent.

Safety performance levels were mixed over the past 12 months, according to figures from the Yangtze Maritime Safety Authorities. The number of major accidents fell slightly to 14, resulting in 12 sunken vessels and direct losses totalling Rmb11.5m, about 28 per cent lower than that of 2012. However, the number of deaths and those missing presumed dead as a result of these accidents jumped by more than one-third to 37 people.
