First regular coal shipping service on Yangtze

15 January 2014
Shipping coal, the staple commodity transported by vessels plying the Yangtze for centuries, has finally been upgraded; a regular service will be launched for the first time on the river just before the Chinese New Year, which falls on 31 January.

The barge operator, Wuhan-based Huazhong Shipping, has signed a four-party agreement with Hubei Huadian Xisaishan Power Plant, Shanxi Coal Import and Export Group and Qinhuangdao Port Group. According to the agreement, the barge operator will provide a regular service three times a month between the Hebei port and Wuhan, with guaranteed departure and arrival times, and guaranteed loading and unloading slots. This will reduce waiting times and costs for the shipping line and will allow the power plant to plan for regular supplies, which amounts to some 1.5m tons a year from Qinhuangdao alone.

Until recently, regular Yangtze shipping services have been restricted to containers and passengers. This new regular service will help secure coal supply in Hubei province over winter and summer months when demand for electricity reaches a peak.
