Railway cargo volume to rise 2% in 2014

15 January 2014
China’s railways are expected to carry 3.28bn tons of cargo this year, up 2 per cent from last year, according to Sheng Guangzu, general manager of China Railway Corp. Last year, trains carried 3.22bn tons of cargo, the same amount as in 2012, according to CRC.

Mr Sheng added that more than 6,600km of new rail lines will be built in China this year. About Rmb630bn will be spent on fixed assets investment in the rail sector. The new railways will be located mainly in the country’s underdeveloped central and western regions.

CRC has speeded up railway construction since it was created last March. A total of 49 railway projects have started to be built, with Rmb664bn of fixed assets investment. By the end of 2013, China’s railways in operation exceeded 100,000km, with 10 per cent for high-speed trains.
