Container vessel capsizes in Shanghai

22 January 2014
A container vessel capsized in the Yangtze River near Chongming Island in Shanghai on the evening of 16 January, causing all 200 containers it was carrying to fall into the water. By 22 January, 84 of them, including two containing dangerous cargo, had been salvaged. Efforts are continuing to locate and salvage the remaining containers.

The capsized ‘Jiyun 8302’, owned by Sinotrans China Yangtze Shipping Corp, one of China’s four major shipping lines, collided with a passing vessel and capsized near a quay owned by Zhenhua Port Machinery. This in turn has caused safety problems for vessels arriving and departing the private quay.

It is not clear from local media reports whether the crew on board were all rescued and what caused the collision in the first place. Most Yangtze container vessels are no more than five years old and are well equipped with modern technology.
