Wuhan to launch direct service to Vietnam and Thailand

22 January 2014
Senior officials from Wuhan New Port Authorities representing Hubei provincial government said that they are conducting a detailed survey among all major import and export companies to quantify the annual volumes of containers within Hubei province before launching a second near-ocean going service linking Wuhan with Vietnam and Thailand by the end of this year. The two countries have experienced rapid growth in trade with China in recent years.

The first direct near-ocean shipping route was Wuhan-Taiwan, launched in October 2013.

The port authorities are also looking for an appropriate venue to establish Wuhan’s first inland feeder port. Cities near Wuhan such as Xiangyang, Jingzhou and Xianning are the front runners, according to officials, with Xiangyang the favourite.

In this regard, Wuhan is following in the footsteps of Tianjin, which has set up 23 inland feeders in landlocked provinces and ensured a steady growth of container volumes over the past years.
