Difficult sailing conditions on Yangtze

19 February 2014
Sailing conditions continue to be difficult in the upper reaches of the Yangtze River. Water levels have declined further and dense fog has shrouded large sections of the river.

On 18 February, the maritime bureau of Anqing in Anhui predicted significant snowfall in the Anqing section of the river. The city’s maritime authority has sent snowstorm warnings to ferries and ships, and it has also strengthened supervision over transportation.

Snow has also affected other modes of transport in China. Guizhou transport authorities, for example, said heavy snow and rain meant traffic controls had been imposed on six expressways and many roads in the province. Snowstorms also delayed more than 30 flights at Nanjing Lukou airport in Jiangsu province on the morning of 18 January, according to the airport authorities.
