MOT tries to root out sole operators on Yangtze

19 February 2014
A new regulation issued by the Ministry of Transport that takes effect on 1 March stipulates that sole shipping operators on the Yangtze will be restricted to transporting only general cargo.

They also need to operate their own vessels of no more than 600 dwt. On top of that, the regulation states that they have to have in place adequate safety management procedures, safety monitoring procedures, accident and emergency procedures, and safety operation procedures. This effectively spells the end of private shipping operators that have dominated the Yangtze for centuries.

The government wants to modernise Yangtze shipping by promoting technology, safety and economies of scale.
