Work to start soon on Shanghai-Nantong bridge

19 February 2014
Construction work will start at the end of this month on the world’s longest cable-stayed bridge connecting Shanghai and Nantong in Jiangsu province.

The 11km highway-railway bridge, including a 5km span across the Yangtze River, will cost Rmb14.2bn to build and should be completed by 2017, according to Jiangsu’s transportation authority.

The bridge will have four railway and six vehicle lanes and will form part of the 137km high-speed Shanghai-Nantong railway. When this line opens, it will take only one hour to travel by train from Shanghai’s Jiading district to Nantong city. The journey between the two cities can currently take more than eight hours since there is no direct service and trains have to take a circuitous route.

The project is also expected to ease traffic pressure on the Jiangyin and Sutong bridges in Jiangsu province.
