Yangzhou faces crew shortage

19 February 2014
Yangzhou Maritime Safety Authorities in Jiangsu province have released employment statistics that show a shortage of more than 4,000 crew members needed for existing vessels that ply the area within its remit. Officials believe that the difficulty of finding crew members is already prohibiting shipping operators from expanding.

Though well paid, crew members live on the vessels they serve most of the time, giving the public an impression of a life of hardship. They don’t require a university degree, but they do need to pass skills tests before they can be employed. As old crew members are retiring, the severe lack of new crew members is becoming a general problem for the Yangtze shipping industry.
