Bengbu port phase 2 to open soon

26 February 2014
Work on phase two of Bengbu river port, costing Rmb274m, has recently been completed and is due to open shortly. It will become the first container port in the north of Anhui province.

Phase two covers a quay length of 166 metres and contains two 1,000-tonne multi-purpose berths with an annual container capacity of 55,000 TEU and breakbulk capacity of 570,000 tonnes.

Once the new terminal is operational, containerised cargo from the region can be shipped to the coastal Jiangsu ports of Taicang and Lianyungang, and from there to destinations across the world.

In the past, there were no ports on the Huaihe River that could handle containers or overweight cargo, which resulted in most cargo being trucked to Yangtze River ports for shipping, said Chen Huaihu, director of Bengbu’s port and shipping administration authority.

The new terminal is expected to play an important role in the economic development of Bengbu city and northern Anhui province.

The 1,078km-long Huaihe River is located about mid-way between the Yellow and Yangtze rivers and, like them, flows from west to east. It enters the Yangtze in Jiangdu, Jiangsu province.
