Chongqing warns of severe shipping risks

26 February 2014
Chongqing Maritime Safety Authorities have said that the upper reaches of the Yangtze River are experiencing very low water levels and have warned of severe shipping risks. The low water level is caused by sparse rainfall and the releasing cycle of water at the Three Gorges Dam. In some sections of Chongqing municipality, the water level has fallen below one metre, lower than in the same period last year. The shipping channel has become narrower and the currents more swift as a result, posing serious danger for passing vessels.

MSA officials have started to issue passing permits section by section and threaten to punish those who overload their vessels.
