Foreign vessel discharges wastewater into Yangtze

26 March 2014
A foreign cargo ship has been caught discharging ballast water into the lower reaches of the Yangtze River. It was discovered by a regular air patrol around 2pm on 23 March, according to Wusong Maritime Safety Administration Bureau in Shanghai. The ship is registered in the West Indian island of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines.

The bureau said the discharge posed at least two potential environmental hazards. One is that the water may contain species native to other parts of the world that may pose a threat to the local ecosystem. It might also contain paint residue from the ship, which could damage the local fishing industry.

Maritime officials are analysing the ballast water to determine if the ship violated any laws.
