Approval granted to China’s first market-priced railway

2 April 2014
China’s National Development and Reform Commission has approved the country’s first freight railway whose fees will be based on market demand, reported China Daily.

The line being constructed in northern China is controlled by the country’s largest coal producer and trader Shenhua Group, with joint investment from the group and other local companies. They will decide upon freight transportation prices.

The 180km line will straddle Inner Mongolia autonomous region and Shanxi province, and is scheduled to start operation in the first half of 2014. It will have an annual capacity of 200m tonnes

The railway is considered another step in China’s market-oriented reform.
