Jiangxi Rongshun Shipping given safety warning

2 April 2014
Chief Safety Inspector Huang Kejian of the Yangtze River Administration under the Ministry of Transport has called in senior representatives of Jiangxi Rongshun Shipping and given them a safety warning, following a major accident involving one of the company’s dangerous goods vessels.

The ‘Ganrongshunhua 18’ was carrying 993 tons of the organic solvent toluene on its way from Zhangjiagang to Jingzhou. It hit an underwater structure and got stranded just outside the main shipping channel in the middle reaches of the Yangtze near a terminal belonging to Waizikou power plant. Water seeped into the fore peak tank but local officials believe that there was no leakage of toluene.

The administration rebuked the company for its unspecified failings that could have resulted in a major disaster. Such safety warnings are now part of a routine procedure to tighten safety on the Yangtze. Companies that receive warnings are required to prepare a detailed plan to improve safety practices; otherwise, their business licences are threatened.
