Suzhou becomes China’s fifth largest general cargo port

2 April 2014
The Yangtze River port of Suzhou in Jiangsu province recorded a throughput of 454m tonnes last year, ranking it fifth in China in terms of general cargo after Shanghai, Ningbo-Zhoushan, Tianjin and Guangzhou, according to statistics from Suzhou’s transport authority.

Suzhou port comprises the three terminals of Zhangjiagang, Changshu and Taicang, which contain a total of 276 berths. The port aims to achieve a throughput of 600m tonnes by 2020 and 750m tonnes by 2030.

Much of this anticipated growth will come in the form of shipments of bulk cargo such as coal, ore and grain from the middle and upper reaches of the Yangtze, reported Xinhua.
