Hubei pledges support to Luzhou-Wuhan-Taiwan route

23 April 2014
Wuhan New Port Authorities, representing Hubei provincial government, pledged continued support to the Luzhou-Wuhan-Taiwan route at a conference on 18 April when all the operators and relevant government departments gathered to reflect on the six months that have passed since the launch of the service.

Official statistics show that, by the end of March, the three shipping lines involved in the route had made 93 regular calls, six short of the planned schedule. On the 49 Taiwan-bound journeys, they carried a total of 2,057 TEU, equivalent to 42 boxes per journey on average. On the 44 inbound journeys, only 292 TEU were transported.

The regular service was launched last October with financial support from local governments in Wuhan and Luzhou. Containers from Luzhou are switched to near-ocean-going vessels in Wuhan and sail directly to Taiwan, reducing the journey time by four to five days to 16 days.

Zhang Lin, Director of Wuhan New Port Authorities and deputy head of the Luzhou-Wuhan-Taiwan service task force, encouraged operators to focus on sales and promote awareness of the service. He also promised swift payment of government subsidies.
