Shift in Chongqing freight to waterways

7 May 2014
Chongqing posted a year-on-year 6.2 per cent increase in import and export container volume to 137,000 TEU in the first quarter of 2014, reported Xinhua. The municipality’s overall international logistics volume in the period increased 12.3 per cent to 2.3m tonnes.

A study by Chongqing Transport Commission has claimed that subsidies to container carriers have stimulated the transportation of freight by waterway from provinces and cities around Chongqing in the first quarter of this year. Higher rail freight prices have also contributed to a shift in transport mode to water and rail-water transport.

The delay of lock maintenance work until after the Spring Festival holidays was an additional factor in the upturn of container shipments by waterway compared with the same period last year.
