Lightening requirement concludes in middle reaches

14 May 2014
Yichang Maritime Authorities have ended their lightening efforts as the water level in the middle reaches of the Yangtze River has continued to rise since the beginning of May. Until now, the maritime officials deployed 35 mobile cranes and lightened 1,215 passing vessels to help avoid stranding incidents as a result of low water levels. The project lasted 187 days. The vessels involved were lightened before re-loading for their onward journey.

According to the official statistics, no accidents happened in the Yichang section throughout the dry season.

In a separate development, a major dredging project started on 12 May between Yichang and Changmenxi, next to the Three Gorges Dam. The 26km section will be dredged to a depth of 3.5 metres and a width of 150 metres. Together with a similar dredging project in nearby Jingjiang, the shipping channel between Yichang and Chenglingji will eventually have a minimum guaranteed water level of 3.5 metres all year round, accommodating vessels up to 3,000dwt.
