First LNG container barge wins safety approval

28 May 2014
Wang Shiming, deputy director of Jiangsu Maritime Safety Authorities, announced on 27 May that China’s first liquefied natural gas-powered vessel has been approved by the Ministry of Transport and that it will start its journey from Nanjing before too long.

The vessel, Wujiazui57, was built in 2011 with a total dead weight tonnage of 4,193 for carrying containers on the Yangtze and the near sea. The project to convert its fuel from diesel to LNG will be managed by Jiangsu Haiqi Ganghua Fuel Development Company.

According to Mr Wang, technical standards for such renovations have been published and management procedures for LNG fuel stations, emergency response procedures and general operational procedures are still being drawn up.
