Landslide risk high near Chongqing Fengdu

28 May 2014
A group of security experts were dispatched last week by the Yangtze River Administration under the Ministry of Transport to inspect a massive crack on the right bank of the Yangtze near Fengdu district, Chongqing. The crack, up to three metres wide and 20 metres deep, totals about 100 metres in length. It first appeared on 8 May after heavy downpours in the region. The experts predicted a landslide highly likely with a volume exceeding200,000 cubic metres.

An emergency response code has already been activated. Two buoys in the area have been relocated in an attempt to ensure that passing vessels keep a safe distance. Upstream, a special observation tower has been erected for the sole purpose of issuing warnings to passing vessels.

Waterway officials will report daily changes of the area to the administration.
