Chongqing-Yichang expressway starts trial run

4 June 2014
The 472km-long Chongqing-Yichang expressway was finally completed at the end of May, reducing the journey time between the two cities from nine hours to six hours, according to local media.

A partial trial run actually started in early April, but a 100km-long section between Wushan and Badong has only been completed recently. A transport official from Wushan county said that the 200km stretch from Wushan to Yichang contained 138 bridges and 39 tunnels and was therefore technically challenging. The expressway is scheduled to enter full operation by October.

The Chongqing-Yichang expressway is part of the Shanghai-Chengdu expressway, which will provide an alternative transport route to Yangtze shippers who wish to bypass the bottleneck of the Three Gorges shiplocks.
