Yangshan expansion outlined

4 June 2014
Shanghai International Port (Group), the operator of all public terminals in Shanghai, is to spend US$1.79bn on expanding capacity by 40 per cent at Yangshan deepwater terminal.

Seven new facilities for container ships will be constructed, reported Nikkei. The project is due to be completed by 2017.

Yangshan terminal is built on a group of islands in Hangzhou Bay, south of Shanghai. The expansion will take place on the northern section of the island group, and it will extend the port by more than 2km, allowing it to accommodate two more 70,000-tonne container ships and five more 50,000-tonne vessels.

The news follows the recent creation of China (Shanghai) Pilot Free Trade Zone, under which the bonded area in Yangshan terminal and three areas in Shanghai operate as trial free trade zones. This easing of customs restrictions is expected to make Yangshan a more attractive shipping destination.
