Wuhan submits major dredging proposal

11 June 2014
Wuhan New Port Authorities representing Hubei provincial government has completed and submitted a major dredging proposal for the Yangtze River, calling for a water level of six metres between Wuhan and Anqing by 2020, according to the Wuhan-based Yangtze Daily newspaper. The feasibility study, currently in the hands of several provincial government departments, will eventually be submitted to the Ministry of Transport.

If the proposal is approved, the 6 metre water level will allow 10,000 dwt vessels to sail between Wuhan and Shanghai all year round. At the moment, Wuhan can only accommodate 5,000 dwt vessels, with a water level of 4.5 metres between Anqing and Wuhan.

An ongoing major dredging project financed by the central government will raise the water level in Nanjing, Jiangsu province, to 12.5 metres by 2015, accommodating 100,000 dwt vessels all year round. A separate dredging project mainly financed by Anhui provincial government will raise the water level between Nanjing and Anqing to 6 metres.
