Nanjing dredging project phase one completed

2 July 2014
The Nanjing dredging project, the biggest investment in the Yangtze waterway and one of the most complex technically, has completed its first phase 14 months ahead of schedule, according to China Water Transport News. This means that the water level in Nantong has reached 12.5 metres and 50,000 dwt ocean vessels can sail to the city throughout the year and 100,000 dwt vessels can sail on tide.

The second phase, already underway, will tackle the section between Nantong and Nanjing, so that by end of 2016, the water level in Nanjing will reach 12.5 metres, thereby also allowing 50,000 dwt ocean-going vessels all year round and 100,000 dwt ocean vessels on tide. The third phase will largely consolidate the earlier dredging efforts on the 280km stretch between Taicang at the mouth of the Yangtze and Nanjing, creating what is dubbed as “a thoroughfare on the Yangtze”.

The major ports in the Yangtze River Delta, from Shanghai to Nanjing, account for about two-thirds of all Yangtze container throughput each year.
