Wuhan set to build 15 metro lines by 2020

2 July 2014
Wuhan will spend nearly Rmb145bn in the next six years to build 15 metro lines to connect the city centre with all its suburban areas, according to its urban transport network blueprint, published on 2 July for public consultation.

The new lines will total 227km in length, nearly 80 per cent of them underground. As the Yangtze and its largest tributary the Han River cut across the city, building metro lines can be technically challenging as well as financially expensive.

Wuhan built its first metro line in 2004 and its second in 2012. At the moment, Lines 3 and 4 are under way, scheduled to go into operation by end of this year and next year respectively.

It has not been made clear how the government will finance this building programme.
