Yangtze container throughput falls 10.3% in half year

16 July 2014
Statistics from the Yangtze River Administration under the Ministry of Transport show that container throughput on the Yangtze fell by 10.3 per cent over the first six months of 2014 to 6.08m TEU. In June, container throughput on the Yangtze trunkline fell by the same margin to 1.06m TEU. Officials didn’t provide any explanation for the decline.

Throughput of general cargo rose by 5.5 per cent over the first half of the year, reaching a total of 950m tons. In June, throughput of general cargo rose by 5.4 per cent to 163m tons.

According to Wuhan New Port Authorities, container throughput in Wuhan bucked the Yangtze trend during the first six months of the year, rising by 20.1 per cent to 476,700 TEU. Container throughput in June rose by 17.7 per cent to nearly 90,000 TEU. Local export-oriented containers were the main driver of the growth, reaching 41,200 TEU, accounting for a growth of 16 per cent. Local domestic containers reached a record high of 16,100 TEU. The remaining 31,700 TEU were transhipment boxes.

Officials attributed the rapid growth to the recent launching of regular calls connecting Wuhan with Luzhou and Taiwan and working in partnership with Yichang and Jingzhou. According to official analysis, Wuhan is becoming a transhipment centre for containers from Sichuan, Chongqing, Shanxi, Hebei and Hunan provinces.
