Xiangyang signs up to be Wuhan’s inland terminal

3 September 2014
The local government of Xiangyang in Hubei signed an agreement with Wuhan New Port Authorities on 21 August to become Wuhan’s first inland terminal. The port authorities, representing the provincial government, are attempting to set up a series of such inland terminals to direct container flow towards Wuhan.

These inland terminals are mostly located in landlocked industrial areas where manufacturers have to rely on rail or road to transport their products to overseas markets. By linking up with Wuhan, Xiangyang can help its exporters complete customs clearance locally before transporting via rail to Wuhan, where goods will be loaded onto vessels directly bound for Shanghai. From there, the containers will be loaded onto ocean liners to overseas destinations.

Officials estimate that the typical Xiangyang exporter that relies on trucking could save Rmb2,000 per container and realise a time saving of 24 hours for the journey to Shanghai without the need for an additional box inspection.

The port authorities want to build Wuhan into a transhipment centre in the middle reaches of the Yangtze.
