Changshu attracts record number of international vessels

17 September 2014
Suzhou port’s Changshu terminal has reported a record number of international vessels over the first eight months of 2014, according to China Ports Network News. A total of 843 vessels anchored at the terminal, up 37 per cent over the same period last year, with a total foreign trade-related cargo throughput of nearly 9.3m tons, up 21 per cent.

The increase was attributed to the extra five berths that went into service during the period. Currently, Changshu has 13 quays and 26 berths, of which 17 are capable of handling 10,000dwt vessels and above. Improved efficiency in customs clearance was another contributing factor. A government incentive package also played an important part in encouraging logistics providers to expand their reach. Official statistics show that more than eight per cent of the cargo is new to the terminal, amounting to some 4m tons, supporting the newly launched bulk route from Changshu to South Korea.
