Sichuan aims to consolidate Yibin and Luzhou ports

22 October 2014
Sichuan provincial government is pushing Yibin and Luzhou ports to consolidate so that they have as much say as Chongqing when it comes to developing as a shipping centre for the upper reaches of the Yangtze, according to China Water Transport News.

Both ports are situated upstream of Chongqing. Luzhou, closer to the municipality, is more established while Yibin is bigger in size. Consolidation allows for better use of resources and avoids unnecessary competition. The provincial government aims to utilise port capabilities to promote co-operation between Sichuan, Yunnan, Guizhou and other provinces in the region.

There is already talk of a major dredging project in the upper reaches so that the section between Yibin and Chongqing will be upgraded to accommodate 5,000dwt vessels all year round by 2020. At the moment, only 1,000dwt vessels can sail along this section.
