Wuhan posts 19% growth in container throughput

12 November 2014
Wuhan New Port Authorities reported a year-on-year increase of 18.8 per cent in container throughput to 810,000 TEU for the first 10 months of this year. Out of this total, the transhipment rate rose to nearly 40 per cent from just 10 per cent five years ago.

Zhang Lin, head of the authorities representing Hubei provincial government, said that the nine non-stop weekly container shuttle services between Wuhan and Shanghai have established a strong following among local exporters, while the number of weekly container services from Wuhan now exceeds 150. The transhipment services from Luzhou, Chongqing, Yichang and Yueyang have become the driving force for Wuhan’s rapid growth in container throughput.

According to the provincial government’s blueprint for port development, Wuhan will have a container capacity of 5.5m TEU by 2020.

In a separate development, the provincial government has already applied to the State Council to turn Yangluo container terminal into a bonded terminal. Port officials are optimistic that the plan will be approved by the end of this year and that the terminal with its new status will operate sometime in 2015.
