Yangtze transhipments to move from Waigaoqiao to Taicang

12 November 2014
Shanghai International Port Group has plans to move its container transhipment business from Waigaoqiao to Taicang, according to an article in China Port Network.

The plan refers to containers from the upper and middle reaches of the Yangtze, specifically Chongqing, Wuhan, Changsha and Jiujiang. Instead of shipping containers to Waigaoqiao terminal and then shuttling them to Yangshan to be loaded onto ocean-going vessels, the containers will instead go to Taicang, where SIPG and Taicang terminal are jointly developing the two container berths in Taicang’s third phase of development. The new shuttle service between Taicang and Yangshan started in July.

It is not clear from the report when this changeover is expected to be completed. But it heralds a major shift by Shanghai and nearby ports from a position of fierce competition to one of meaningful co-operation.
