Zhengzhou-Wanzhou rail project approved

18 December 2014
Wanzhou in Chongqing municipality is set to become one of the major port cities on the Yangtze as a plan to build a rail link between Zhengzhou, capital of Henan province, and Wanzhou has been approved, according to Xinhua.

Much of Wanzhou was submerged by the Three Gorges Dam project, and so it has had to rebuild its infrastructure. Connecting with Zhengzhou, one of the major stations on the national cargo rail network, will boost Wanzhou’s status as a major port city on Yangtze trunkline.

There is already a regular container rail service between Chengdu and Wanzhou and a container shipping service between Wanzhou and Shanghai. The city has also started a container rail service to Xian.

Wanzhou airport, which went into operation in May 2003, is undergoing an expansion with direct flights to Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Chengdu, Kunming, Xiamen, Shenzhen, Xian, Guizhou and Hangzhou. A direct service to Hong Kong is scheduled to start at the start of next year.
